I.         BASIC NOTES

1. Types of Oil

a)      Soft Oil (軟油, 油) – regardless of temperature, always in liquid form.

b)      Hard Oil (硬油, 脂, 蠟) – regardless of temperature, always in solid form.

c)      Exception – Coconut Oil and Palm Oil.  These two are in liquid form during summer and solidifies during winter (when temperature is below 20℃).

Characteristics of Palm Oil

Palm Oil is also known as 耐炸油 in Taiwan.  It is commonly used by street hawkers to make fried food.  Its special characteristic of not changing colour even when the oil is dirty from over usage made it popular with street hawkers.  Danger of this oil lies with the fact that, being a Hard Oil, Palm Oil is a solid oil in normal temperature (20).  A significant higher number of strokes happen in winter were traced back to the consumption of fried food eaten late at night resulting in the hard oil left in the blood.  The hard oil tends to solidify when met with sudden temperature drop as the subject leaves the warm bed in the morning causing the blood clot.

Characteristics of Coconut Oil

a)      Good for producing bubbles (which breaks down dirt particles).

b)      Because of its strong property in removing oil and dirt, do NOT go beyond 30% when used in Skin Soap unless it is intended for very oily skin.
